As a part of our comprehensive approach to empowering single women while equipping local schools, we established a second library at Mathillo Sikri Primary School located in Jiri, Dolakha. Mathillo Sikri is a government school, which was established in 1992. Around 75 local children attend this school, which is poorly equipped. We donated books worth $4,000 US Dollars to the school. These books were donated in collaboration with our partner agencies., Room to Read (www.roomtoread.org), a non-profit organization for improving literacy and gender equality in education in the developing world, and The Asian Foundation (www.asiafoundation.org), a non-profit international development organization committed to improving lives across a dynamic and developing Asia.
These books were transported by bus from Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, to Jiri, Dolakha. Then they were transported from Jiri to the Mathillo Sikri School with the help of local residents. These library books were handed over to Shankar Sunuwar, Principle of Mathillo Sikri School during a special event. Most of these books are designed for students at the primary level. With these books, we hope to encourage school children to form a reading habit outside their course books. According to Principal Mr. Sunuwar school children are already spending substantial time reading these books in the school library. We hope to increase the volume of these books in the near future.
