Immediate Aid Relief for Earthquake victims

About This Project

On April 25, 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal killing thousands of people and demolishing more than half a million homes, most of the damage occurred in rural parts of Nepal. To make the situation worse, a second major earthquake struck on 28th April 2015, 76 kilometers east of the capital city, Kathmandu, just as Nepalese were beginning to recover from the first one.

According to reports from the Home Ministry of Nepal, the death toll from the two major earthquakes was 8,583 while aftershocks lasted for months. The earthquakes destroyed roads, caused dozens of landslides, and made access to remote areas very difficult.

As our entire nation was shaken by earthquakes, Yang-Ward Foundation stepped up by providing immediate aid relief to earthquake victims and help rebuilding the community.

With the help of many individual donors including the US-based Kavanaugh Charitable Foundation by Paul and Debbie Kavanaugh, campus communities such as MUNSA-University of Missouri Nepalese Student Association and Nicholls International Community from Nicholls State University, businesses such as Superior Home Service from Arizona, USA, came together to raise $15,000.

Raised amounts were immediately used in providing basic things like tents, food and medicine in different locations. With the help of our Nepal volunteer co- coordinators, Arun Khatri and Sujita Shrestha, in collaboration with Global Action, Nepal’s representative Rajani Maharjan went to Kavrepalanchowk district with 80 tents and 275 blankets which were distributed to the local residents of ward no. 3. A total of 114 households from Nayagaun were provided with blankets, and tents were given to residents of 80 houses who needed the tents most.

The second team of volunteers led by Madan Ghimire left for Khatrishowa Village in Gorkha, one of the hardest hit areas. They went there with relief packages including food, medicine and tents which were distributed to 72 households.

The third location where volunteers of Yang-Ward Foundation reached out to help was Dolakha, also one of the areas hardest hit by the earthquake. Under the leadership of Arun Khatri, earthquake victims from 80 households were provided with tents and blankets.

The relief aid program by the Yang-Ward Foundation was successful. This would not have been possible without the generous support of our donors, volunteers and well-wishers. We would like to thank all our volunteers who spent hours of their time serving needy people despite great difficulty.
